IN CHARACTER
Name: J. M. Austen
Canon: All about J
Canon Point: Vol. 2. After her ”disappearance” but before she gets arrested & thrown to jail.
Age: 19

History:
WARNING: J's history contains talk about triggering subjects: rape, child abuse, incest and prostitution.

Also, J is a transwoman and so I will be using female pronouns for her.

J was only 10 years old when she sneaked into the local movie theatre to see movie called Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. As she saw Marilyn Monroe on the big screen for the first time ever, J knew that she would want to be a star like her. J memorized all the songs and began to perform the musical numbers pretending to be Marilyn. This caused some discord between her parents: her mother, who was Roman-catholic, disapproved greatly and couldn't understand why her 'son' didn't act like other boys, while her father only found J's behaviour endearing and supported her by taking her to bars, where she could have an actual audience. Unfortunately these happy and exciting days didn't last for long as soon her father lost his job as car mechanic and instead of looking for another job, he sought comfort from the bottle and formed a drinking problem. So, even though J's mother was forced to start working, the family was struggling badly with the financial problems. One day, when J was 13, she came early back to home from school after being bullied by the other kids for being 'sissy.' Her father was at home, already drunk beyond the comprehension, and raped J as she was singing one of Marilyn's songs to him. As it was happening, both of them failed to notice that the mother had returned back from work and saw what was happening. In a shock, she took gun out of the drawer and shot her husband. J herself, didn't exactly understand what had just happened and the only things that she remembers from that day are the rape, lying underneath her dead father and hysterical mom taken away by the policemen.

Right after the tragedy had hit their family, J was taken to orphanage where she lived for a year until she was adopted to Carensberg family and enrolled to prestigious school owned by the said family. As can be expected, J's studying didn't really go as well as her adoptive aunt had hoped. She was far more interested in hanging out with other delinquents than actually attending to any classes. And it took less than a week from her to find a pub where she could perform musical numbers during the night while dressed up as Marilyn. Of course, the teachers found out rather quickly about J's night time activities and decided to move her to stay in the same room as strict older student named Paul Anderson, who was also related to Carensburg family, hoping that he would have a positive influence on her. Well, much to everyone's disappointment Paul had zero control over J and she kept going out whenever she felt like it. In fact, J had more effect on Paul as she noticed that the older student was growing rather attracted to her. At first, she found it only amusing to see him struggling with his feelings and she only teased him about it. But only after few months she, too, had fallen in love with him. For a while, J really thought that romance between them could work out even if they had to keep it as secret due to school's conservative atmosphere. But unfortunately, Paul couldn't bring himself to accept these feelings of attraction towards younger 'man' and rejected J's advances. He also revealed that his aunt had told him about her past. Upset and heartbroken J didn't approve that Paul had gone and asked about her personal information without her permission. She packed all her stuff and left the school for good, leaving to New York with a club owner named Arther, whom she had met earlier at the pub.

However, it quickly became clear that her stay at New York wouldn't be nearly as glamorous as she had hoped it to be. The club Blue Rapid, in which she was working at, did rather poorly and was struggling with debts. Luckily for Arther, J's performances managed to bring in few richer customers but that alone wasn't enough. J eventually came up with an idea that she could start meeting patrons after the show and sleep with them for money, to which Arther agreed to. And so, after few years thanks to J's hard work the club was back on its feet and was once again making money.

One winter evening J came across a collapsed young woman in front of her doorstep. Mistaking her for a man J took her in, hoping that she could, according to her words, "train a young pauperised scholar in the art of carnal desires." But she soon found out that the homeless person she had picked up was indeed a woman named Rita. But despite her disappointment J still decided to let her to stay at her place and even gave her a job as her attendant. During the months they lived together, Rita grew to love J and started to beg her not to take any more 'clients' after the show, especially when she was booked to a congressman who was known to be segregationist and was even rumored to be part of the KKK. J ignored all Rita's pleads and continued to let Arther pimp her, not caring about the possible danger it could bring to her.

However, one day Rita admitted to her that she had slept with Arther behind J's back, even though being fully aware that he was J's lover. Feeling upset and betrayed J went to confront Arther about this, who in return admitted that he was thinking about asking Rita to marry him. As a revenge, J took advantage of Rita's feelings for her and seduced her to sleep with her, while making sure that Arther would find them in middle of the act. This discovery led infuriated Arther to fire J and chase her away from their lives.

Personality:

Loaded with plenty of flirt and a killer sex appeal, J's really dangerous to any man around. She's an amazing singer, an entertainer if you will, and just with a one song she can make even the most cynical person to blush and feel their heart beat faster for her. She indeed is someone who was born to be in the center of the spotlight. And the best thing about this is that J loves it, she loves her work and the attention it brings to her. But of course, she only finds her hunger for adoration and attention only reasonable. After all, she's a true star, one that shines and burns brightly through the dark bringing joy to the others.

But as one can guess that's only one side of J's rather complex character. True, when working she's a true darling, talking sweet and smiling just about to everyone. But as the performance ends and J comes down from the stage it quickly becomes clear that she's not really the nicest lady to be around with. While she's not exactly a mean person, she's rather snarky and critical towards others and quick to make fun out them. This can be seen how her attitude towards Rita changed from seductive to more demanding after she realized that she was a woman. Sure, there was a bit of teasing mixed in with her behavior but she didn't hesitate to push her alone and tell her to go along with her whims. She doesn't either have any qualms about using others to gain what she wants. After all, she used Mrs. Carensburg to get away from the orphanage and then later she used Arther to get away from the school. But still, despite all her nastiness and selfishness, she doesn't want to hurt anyone and knows importance of kind acts-- after all, she let Rita to live with her for free, even though she couldn't get a lover out of her.

J also has surprisingly cynical world view, which is only understandable considering that she comes from a time when the world was all but kind towards people like her (she's from early 60's). She's used to the hateful comments and to be viewed like a freak by other people and often just shrugs it off. Same also goes for the fact that instead of seeing her as a woman, everyone sees her as a gay man. But hey, that's how the world is and complaining about it won't change a thing. Of course, there are days when J's feeling under the weather and isn't going to take shit from any asshole. During those days she's also more than ready to put the said asshole in their rightful place either by witty comment or by shoving her heels where the sun doesn't shine. In canon, when Paul rejected her for the first time (after first showing affection), J started a bar fight with soldiers who called her tranny. While finding violence distasteful and scary at the times, J knows that there are some situations when you just have to follow the Lord's word and ”do what must be done.”

But in the end, it'd be lying to say that none of the hardships she's gone through hasn't gotten under her thick skin. However, out of all horrible and hateful people she has met in her life, J herself is her own biggest critic. She has always known who she is and what she wants to do with her life and wouldn't want it any other way. She has never wished that she'd be a ”normal man,” but still she keeps calling herself demeaning slurs such as 'nelly' or 'tranny.' After being called and treated like a pervert and a freak of nature greatly lowered her sense of self-worth, making her believe it to be true. The mental scars she has received run much deeper than she would ever want to admit. Of course, a lot of this is shadowed by the traumatic events that took place in her childhood with her family. J blames no one but herself for the tragedy that happened to her family. She firmly believes that it would have been better if she her mom had shot her instead of her father, because that way he'd be alive and her mother wouldn't be sick. This is why J so easily sacrifices herself and let's Arther to pimp her out even to violent and dangerous clients. The only moment, when J doesn't hate herself or find herself disgusting is when she dresses up like Marilyn Monroe and performs to an audience while singing her songs.

But despite her hurt mind and insecurities, J's a lot stronger and braver than anyone gives her credit for. She continues on living and pursuing her dreams despite all the setbacks. She lives her life as she wants to, dressing up as she likes and is prepared defend her right to be a 'perverted, freak of nature' till to her grave. It's just like the author of the series said it herself "J is someone who's cute but also strong."

Abilities/Skills:
J is a normal human being, so no superpowers here. But she's exceptionally good singer and dancer. Also, she'd probably boast around with her deep-throating skills.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Weaknesses:
J is tiny. While she has somewhat boarder shoulders than an average woman, she is still very skinny and short. It's like she doesn't have any muscles on her body. On top of that, thanks to recent events in her life (Rita's and Arther betrayal) her mental state isn't in the best shape as she's prone to depression.

Strenghts:
Well, so far there hasn't been invented high heels that she couldn't walk with? She's also a talented make up artist. But seriously, while J is no stranger to depression or anxiety she's still able to overcome any kind of hardships that life keeps throwing at her.

Items: The dress she was wearing and purse. In her purse you can find the following items:

a wallet (with few dollars in it)
a pack of menthol cigarettes
lighter
lipstick
mascara
rouge
hairbrush
